Rules and safety on Upwork

Upwork protects clients and freelancers, but only when both follow its rules. Breaking them can get your account suspended permanently.

One account, your real identity

Have one freelancer account in your own name, and complete identity verification when Upwork asks. Never use someone else's account, rent your account, or let another person work under your name. Your photo and name must be truly yours.

Payments stay on Upwork

Clients you meet on Upwork must pay you through Upwork. Asking for, or accepting, payment outside Upwork breaks the Terms of Service and removes all payment protection. Upwork's rules on this apply for a long period after you first meet a client, so do not move existing Upwork clients off the platform.

Contact details

Do not share your phone number, email or other contact details to move a client off Upwork before a contract starts. Keep early conversations in Upwork messages. After a contract starts, follow Upwork's current rules about video calls and communication tools.

Honest profiles and proposals

  • Claim only skills, experience and results you really have.
  • Never copy another freelancer's portfolio or proposal.
  • If you use AI tools to help write, review and personalise every proposal yourself. Clients notice generic, copied text, and misleading proposals can lead to account restrictions.

Spotting fake clients

Be careful when a "client":

  • asks you to pay for training, equipment or "account activation",
  • asks you to download unknown software or log in somewhere through a link,
  • wants to chat on Telegram or WhatsApp before any contract,
  • offers a high price for very little work, or sends a cheque and asks for money back,
  • has no verified payment method, no history and a vague job post.

Real clients explain the work clearly and use Upwork contracts. Report suspicious accounts using Upwork's report option.

Practice task (10 min)

  1. Write a polite reply for a client who asks to pay you outside Upwork. Example: "Thanks! To keep us both protected, I work and get paid only through Upwork contracts."
  2. List the five fake-client warning signs from this lesson and keep them where you apply for jobs.
